Roku VS Google TV

by Joshua Zamora on December 20, 2011

Let’s take a quick look at two giants in the home theater video streaming industry, Roku vs Google TV.  I’m speaking specifically about the Roku XS and the Logitech Revue with Google TV.  I don’t have a TV infused with the Google TV technology so I needed an external box.

If you would like to read my full roku reviews you can view each on to the right of this article.

Roku vs Google TV: Similarities

The Roku XS and the Google TV both retail for $99.  Each come with an HDMI port allowing you to connect to your high definition TV’s.  The Roku XS and the Google TV come with USB ports to stream personal videos and pictures and both have the ability to plug in to power, the TV, and wirelessly to the home network.  Each has the ability to stream in 1080p.  Regarding content, both devices come with Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.

Roku vs Google TV: Differences

One of the biggest differences would be the remote style.  The Roku XS comes with a standard one handed remote although it has motion technology similar to the Wii remote.  The Google TV is a keyboard with  track pad.

The Google TV comes with a full internet capable Chrome browser and the Roku box doesn’t.  Unfortunately many media network specific video streaming sites block the Google TV to stream through the browser.

The Google TV has Logitech Harmony technology which allows you to control your DVR and DVD.  The Roku on the other hand, is much better equipped to play video games as the remote has gaming A/B buttons and comes preloaded with Angry Birds.

I would say the Roku Interface is a little cleaner that the Google TV’s, but if you add a lot of channels may require a little patience to navigate.

I hope you were able to get some good information from my Roku Vs Google TV review.  If I had to pick between the two and donate one to charity I think I would stick with my Roku XS.

My main purpose for owning it is to have the ability to watch my Netflix videos from the comfort of my couch and I have my laptop for full internet browsing, and I also love the fact I can play Angry Birds.
