Roku Vs Boxee

by Joshua Zamora on December 18, 2011

I wanted to do a quick comparison of the Roku VS Boxee.  By that I mean the Roku XS and the Boxee box from D-link.  Here are my thoughts. If you want a full roku review you can visit the homepage.

Roku VS Boxee: Similarities

Both devices come with HMDI ports.  They both have the ability to play Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.  They both are boxes that connect to the TV and have the ability to connect wirelessly to you home wireless network.  Both have apps that can connect to Facebook giving you the ability to share photo’s, videos and links.  Both also have an Micro SD slot for expandable memory.

Roku VS Boxee Differences:

The Roku is designed with Gaming in mind as the controller has a directional pad and gaming A/B buttons, the Boxee however is more geared toward internet browsing and content.

The Roku operates using channels and apps as the main course for navigation while Boxee searches the internet for the Apps, Channels, and content and displays them in one location.

Both devices come with hand held style remotes and as mentioned earlier the Roku comes equipped with the gaming A/B buttons however, the bottom side of the Boxee remote comes with a full Qwerty keypad.  It takes a moment to get used to but I found it to be a useful tool while searching.  The Boxee comes with 2 USB ports while the roku only has one.

Not to mention Boxee supports all channels like Vudu, Vevo, and Youtube. The Roku has yet to approve of a Youtube app.

Finally it’s important to mention that the Roku XS sells for $99 while the Boxee price ranges from $170-$219.  This give the Boxee a little more options but I mainly purchased them to enjoy my Netflix from the comfort of my couch.

So if you want an affordable solution to video streaming the Roku XS works great!  If you are a little more tech oriented and have some pocket cash to blow, the Boxee might be for you.

I hope this Roku VS Boxee Review helps you to make an informed decision on what streaming player to add to your home.
